How to block spam calls: why your phone's settings aren't enough

Spam calls keep coming because they are cheap to make and caller ID is easy to fake. iPhone and Android both have settings that help, and it is worth turning them on. But on their own they leave you exposed: either they let too much through, or they silence calls you actually needed. Here is what each layer does, where it falls short and how to close the gap.

On an iPhone, Settings › Apps › Phone › Screen Unknown Callers can silence or screen everyone who is not in your contacts, but that includes the courier, your bank or your doctor's office calling from a number you never saved. Blocking by hand works one number at a time, and spammers switch numbers constantly. On Android, spam filtering in the Phone app depends on the maker and the version, and plenty still gets through.

Add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov. It cuts calls from legitimate telemarketers, which makes the rest easier to spot. But scammers ignore it, and the robocalls that cost people money are exactly the ones it does not stop. The registry and your phone's settings are a good start, not a solution.

That gap is what our team built Block-Spam to close. Its AI engine does not wait for people to report a number: it learns from how calls behave, such as very short calls, one number ringing many different people, or bursts of calls in a short time, and flags the number on its own. That way new spam numbers can be blocked sooner, before anyone has had to report them.

Blocking more only helps if the calls that matter still reach you. The engine also learns to tell them apart: numbers people actually talk to, with calls that are answered and last, count against spam, so a delivery driver or your bank's fraud line is not treated like a robocaller. If a call is ever blocked by mistake, mark it as not spam or add it to your allow list, and it will always ring.
